Venice, 1911, the composer Gustav von Aschenbach goes to the Lido, the Hotel des Bains, a holiday of rest to recover from a heart attack which he suffered some time ago. Here, the protagonist, who in later ages, we are struck by the beauty of a young Polish ephebic, Tadzio, who frequents the beach hotel. He sided infatuation, and love in his heart causing a deep crisis that leads him from one side to counteract this feeling, and wanting the other to accommodate vivendone all emotions. He decides to remain silent at the end beside the boy, simply observe and try to continue to resist his emotions to which, however, often give way, as to resort to dye hair and heavy makeup, with a barber, to preserve a youth has passed. Gustav never leave Venice, even though he was now clear that there was rampant cholera epidemic. Contracted the disease, will spend his last moments on the Lido beach, watching Tadzio against the light that is directed towards the sea.
